IPART's role in regulating the gas market in NSW includes the following:
Safety net or default retail prices for low usage customers
Although all customers can choose their retail supplier by taking up a market-based offer, households and most small businesses are able to remain on, or return to, their standard supplier at prices regulated by IPART.
Current regulated prices and information on IPART’s work in this area are available from the gas retail pricing section.
For more information on choosing your electricity or gas supplier, click the list of NSW Energy Suppliers button below.
Licences for gas companies
IPART administers the energy licensing regime on behalf of the Minister for Utilities. All companies that retail or distribute gas in NSW must have a licence issued by the Minister. IPART advises the Minister in relation to the issuing of new licences and the nature and enforcement of any licence conditions.
For more information see the gas licensing section of the website.
Information on the performance of gas companies
IPART regularly publishes information papers on the performance of gas retail companies in NSW. Copies of these papers are available from the performance statistics section of the website.
Gas network regulation
IPART is no longer the regulator for gas networks in NSW. On 1 July 2008, the Australian Energy Regulator (regulator) and the Australian Energy Markets Commission (rule maker) took on responsibility for gas network regulation under the national regime.
For historical information and completed reviews see the gas network access section of the website or the Gas Code Registrar.
