Abstract: The Government asked the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) to undertake a review of the funding and performance framework for health in New South Wales and to examine best practice in Australia and overseas. The review looks at the broad performance of the Australian health system relative to other OECD countries and then examines the performance and funding framework for health in New South Wales. The report includes a discussion of Commonwealth/State funding arrangements. It also includes an examination of monitoring and reporting arrangements between the NSW Department of Health and area health services. The report also examines best practice in Australian and overseas health systems for performance monitoring, reporting and benchmarking of safety, equity and efficiency. The report includes a chapter on best practice in the management of chronic care.
