Opal Fares Compliance

IPART monitors the fares of public transport providers to ensure that fares do not exceed the maximums allowed.
Starts Side Navigation Ends Secondary Navigation

As well as determining maximum fares, IPART checks the fares proposed by the NSW Government to ensure that fares do not exceed the maximums allowed.

The determinations set a maximum average increase in fares across different ticket types rather than specifying a maximum price for each individual ticket.  Within these limits, Transport for NSW decides what fares will apply and uses the fares collected to offset some of the cost of providing the services.  It may either increase all fares by up to the maximum average amount, or increase some fares by more and others by less than this average amount provided it ensures the average increase does not exceed the maximum we determined.

Transport for NSW must submit any proposed fare changes to IPART in advance together with any supporting information needed to show that they comply with our determinations.

We examine Transport for NSW’s proposed fare changes and release a statement about whether or not the proposed fares comply with our determination.
