IPART has made decisions on special variation applications from eight councils to increase their income from rates above the rate peg.

Eight councils across NSW have applied to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) for a special variation to increase their income from rates above the rate peg in 2021-22.

For the first time, the amount that councils will be able to increase the revenue they can collect from rates will depend on their level of population growth, under the 2022-23 rate peg decision announced today by the Independent Pricing and Regul

IPART has released decisions on applications made by eight councils to increase general income above the 1.5% rate peg from 1 July 2017. Increases have been approved for Bellingen, Byron, Inverell and Port Macquarie-Hastings councils.

IPART is seeking feedback and submissions from the public on the review of the rate peg methodology to include population growth.

Mid-Coast Council has formally applied to IPART for a special variation to increase its general income above the rate peg over the four year period 2017-18 to 2020-2021.

IPART has approved, with a minor variation, Mid-Coast Council’s application to increase general income above the rate peg.

IPART has approved applications from Bellingen Shire and Port Macquarie-Hastings councils to increase general income above the 1.5% rate peg from 1 July 2017.

IPART has approved Inverell Shire Council’s application to increase general income by more than the rate peg of 1.5% from 1 July 2017.

IPART has not approved Lockhart Shire Council’s application to increase its general income by a cumulative 37% over the next seven years.

IPART has approved Byron Shire Council’s application to increase general income by more than the rate peg of 1.5% from 1 July 2017.

IPART has approved applications from Bellingen Shire and Port Macquarie-Hastings councils to increase general income above the 1.5% rate peg from 1 July 2017.

IPART has not approved Muswellbrook Shire Council’s application to increase its general income by a cumulative 20.39% over the next four years.
