Solar feed-in tariff benchmarks
Want to know how much your solar energy is worth? Our benchmark ranges can help you understand if your electricity retailer is offering a reasonable solar feed-in tariff.
Each year, IPART sets 2 solar feed-in tariff benchmark ranges. These are:
- An all-day solar feed-in tariff benchmark range – this is a flat-rate solar feed-in tariff that applies across the whole day
- A time-of-day solar feed-in tariff benchmark ranges – these benchmark ranges vary depending on the time that solar is exported to the grid.
These benchmarks provide a guide about the value of the solar feed-in tariffs you can expect to be paid by your electricity retailer for the solar electricity you export to the grid. Our benchmarks can help you:
- understand whether you are getting a reasonable solar feed-in tariff from your retailer
- understand the short-term financial returns available from investing in solar panels and/or battery storage systems.
IPART’s benchmark ranges for 2024-25
All-day solar feed-in tariff benchmark range
Our all-day solar feed-in benchmark is 4.9 to 6.3 c/kWh for 2024-25. You can read our Fact Sheet on our all-day solar feed-in tariff benchmark to learn about how we set this benchmark.
Time-of-day solar feed in tariff benchmark ranges
Our time-of-day solar feed-in benchmark ranges for 2024-25 are shown in the table below. You can read our Fact Sheet on our time-of-day solar feed-in tariff benchmarks to learn about how we set them.
Time period | 2024–25 (c/kWh) |
6 am to 3 pm | 4.7 to 6.0 |
3pm to 4 pm | 6.9 to 8.8 |
4pm to 5 pm | 8.1 to 10.1 |
5pm to 6 pm | 9.4 to 11.9 |
6pm to 7 pm | 18.4 to 22.0 |
7pm to 8 pm | 12.6 to 15.1 |
8 pm to 6 am | 9.6 to 11.5 |
IPART’s time-of-day benchmarks reflect the variation in wholesale electricity prices throughout the day, which are typically:
- Lower through the middle of the day (when solar energy meets a proportion of demand), and
- Higher in the late afternoon and nighttime (when solar energy meets little or none of this demand).
Retailers can offer different feed-in tariffs throughout the day in line with our benchmarks to reflect the variation in wholesale prices, however, they are not required to. We have found that most retailers are continuing to only offer an all day rate for solar exports.
